Blepharoplasty Serbia — before and after eyelid surgery results, Clinic 11 Belgrade
Real patient result · Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) · Clinic 11 – Dr Nataša Popović, Belgrade

Medically reviewed by Dr. Goran Gaćeša, MD — Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, Belgrade. View credentials. Last reviewed March 2026.

Blepharoplasty in Serbia — Eyelid Surgery Guide 2026

This page covers what blepharoplasty can and cannot improve, upper vs lower technique differences, recovery, risks, and how to verify surgeon credentials before booking. For Belgrade clinic pricing, see our Blepharoplasty Cost Belgrade page.

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) reshapes the upper and/or lower eyelids by removing or repositioning skin and fat to restore a fresher, more open eye area. It can improve heavy upper lids and under-eye bags — but it does not reliably erase dark circles caused by pigmentation or thin skin, and it does not lift the brow. Understanding what the procedure addresses — and what it does not — is the most important step before booking.

Not sure if you need upper, lower, or both? Send photos and your goals — our partner surgeons assess remotely and give a clear recommendation before you commit to anything.

Why Do Patients Choose Serbia for Blepharoplasty?

Experienced surgeons, accredited facilities, and significantly lower pricing — without compromising technique or safety standards.

  • Price: Upper blepharoplasty from €900, combined upper and lower from €1,900 — typically 40–55% less than UK, Ireland, Germany, and Scandinavia
  • Surgeons: Board-certified plastic surgeons with high surgical volume; licensing verified through the official Serbian Medical Chamber registry (Lekarska komora Srbije)
  • Facilities: Private hospitals and clinics with Ministry of Health-licensed operating theatres; accreditation through Agencija za akreditaciju zdravstvenih ustanova Srbije where held
  • Short stay: Blepharoplasty requires only 3–5 days in Belgrade — one of the shortest recovery stays of any cosmetic surgery
  • Getting there: Direct flights from London (2h 45m), Stockholm (2h 30m), Berlin (1h 50m), Munich (1h 25m)

Techniques & What Blepharoplasty Can Fix

Upper and lower eyelids are different problems requiring different approaches. Many patients only need one region — over-treating is how you get unnatural results.

1. Upper blepharoplasty

Addresses excess skin (dermatochalasis) that creates hooding over the upper lids, making eyes look tired, heavy, or older. An incision is made in the natural upper lid crease.

  • Removes excess skin and protruding fat pads from the upper lids
  • Scars sit within the lid fold — become nearly invisible with healing
  • Can be done under local anaesthesia as a day procedure
  • One of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in Belgrade

💡 Functional vs cosmetic: If drooping skin interferes with your upper visual field, the problem may qualify as functional ptosis rather than purely cosmetic. Evaluation by an ophthalmologist is appropriate before proceeding — this distinction matters medically and for potential insurance coverage in some countries.

2. Lower blepharoplasty

Addresses under-eye bags caused by fat prolapse and, in some patients, excess lower lid skin. The technical approach is more variable than upper lids — and the decision significantly affects both the result and the risk profile.

  • Transconjunctival approach: incision inside the lower lid, no external scar — best for fat prolapse with minimal skin excess and good lid tone
  • Transcutaneous (external) approach: incision below the lash line — indicated when meaningful skin laxity is present; higher risk of lid retraction than transconjunctival
  • Fat repositioning vs removal: modern practice increasingly favours repositioning fat to fill the tear-trough hollow rather than simply removing it — removal alone can create a hollowed appearance over time

3. Combined upper and lower blepharoplasty

Both upper and lower lids addressed in a single procedure.

  • Saves cost and avoids two separate recovery periods
  • Usually performed under light sedation or general anaesthesia (not local alone)
  • Recovery slightly longer than single-lid surgery

4. Brow position — why some patients need a brow lift instead

A low brow position can mimic or exaggerate the appearance of upper lid excess. Removing more upper lid skin in this scenario gives a poor result.

  • Brow descent onto the lid creates apparent skin heaviness that is actually brow ptosis, not eyelid redundancy
  • A good pre-operative consultation differentiates brow descent from true upper lid excess
  • If your brow sits at or below the orbital rim, discuss brow position explicitly with your surgeon

⚠️ Note: The right approach is determined at the pre-operative consultation. Send photos — your surgeon will advise whether you need upper, lower, or both, and which technique is appropriate for your anatomy.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Blepharoplasty is suitable from age 35–40 onwards when functional or aesthetic changes to the eyelids are present. Several factors affect both safety and outcome.

  • Visible upper lid hooding, skin excess, or puffiness that bothers you and has not responded to skincare or non-surgical treatments
  • Under-eye fat bags creating a persistently tired or aged appearance
  • Good general health; no active eye infections or untreated eye conditions
  • Realistic expectations — blepharoplasty refreshes the eye area, it does not change your fundamental facial structure or erase pigmentation-related dark circles
  • Not currently pregnant; stable weight

Extra caution if: you have dry eye syndrome (blepharoplasty can temporarily worsen symptoms — discuss with your surgeon and have dry eye assessed before surgery); thyroid eye disease; previous eyelid surgery; or significant lower lid laxity (which may require canthopexy to prevent ectropion).

Blepharoplasty vs non-surgical alternatives

Botox can lift the brow slightly and reduce crow’s feet. Filler can address under-eye hollowing but not fat prolapse. Neither reliably addresses true skin excess or herniated fat — those require surgery. If you have significant upper lid hooding or prominent eye bags, non-surgical options are unlikely to produce the improvement you are looking for.

Indicative Cost

For detailed Belgrade clinic pricing, visit our Blepharoplasty Cost Belgrade page.

Upper blepharoplasty in Belgrade typically starts from €900. Lower blepharoplasty from approximately €1,100–€1,200. Combined upper and lower from approximately €1,900. Premium package procedures can reach €5,000. Final price depends on technique, anaesthesia plan, and what is included.

How Long Do You Stay in Belgrade?

Blepharoplasty has one of the shortest stays of any cosmetic procedure. Plan for 4–6 days minimum.

Day 0

Arrival · Pre-operative consultation · Upper vs lower confirmed · Anaesthesia plan agreed · Written quote and consent discussion

Day 1

Surgery (45 minutes to 2 hours depending on scope) · Day procedure or one overnight stay for combined procedures · Cold compresses begin

Days 2–4

Swelling and bruising peak then begin to subside · Rest · Cold compresses · Head elevated

Days 5–6

Suture removal (non-dissolving sutures) · Final check-up · Surgeon clearance to fly · Return home

Recovery — What to Expect

Blepharoplasty recovery is more manageable than most facial procedures. Most patients are comfortable being seen in public at 10–14 days.

Days 1–3

Swelling and bruising peak — normal and expected. Eyes may feel tight. Cold compresses help. Vision may be slightly blurred from ointment or swelling — this is temporary.

Days 5–7

Sutures removed. Bruising yellowing and fading. Most patients feel well. Desk work typically resumable by day 7.

Weeks 2–3

Most residual bruising manageable with makeup. Most patients comfortable being seen in public. Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting.

Weeks 3–6

Scars settle and soften. Residual swelling resolves. Full activity resumed with surgeon clearance from week 4.

Months 3–6

Final result visible. Scars fade to near-invisible within the lid crease. Most patients report the result looks most natural at 3–6 months.

⚠️ Red flags requiring urgent review: severe pain, sudden vision change, rapidly increasing swelling, or significant bleeding are not normal recovery events. Contact your surgeon or seek emergency care immediately if these occur.

Safety & Risks

Blepharoplasty has a good safety profile in experienced hands. Understanding the risks before surgery is part of informed consent.

Blepharoplasty is generally considered one of the lower-risk facial plastic surgery procedures. Serious complications are uncommon — but they exist and must be understood before proceeding.

Dry eye and irritation are among the most common post-operative complaints, particularly in the first weeks. Temporary difficulty fully closing the eyelids (lagophthalmos) can occur as swelling resolves and typically improves within weeks. Patients with pre-existing dry eye must be assessed before surgery and should discuss this explicitly with their surgeon.

Lower lid malposition (ectropion) — outward turning of the lower lid — is the most significant aesthetic complication of lower blepharoplasty. It is more common with transcutaneous approaches and can require revision surgery. Risk is significantly reduced by appropriate patient selection, conservative skin removal, and canthopexy where lower lid laxity is present.

Haematoma (blood collection) is uncommon but possible, more so in patients taking blood-thinning medications. Stop aspirin, ibuprofen, and relevant supplements at least two weeks before surgery and disclose all medications.

Scarring in upper lid blepharoplasty sits within the natural lid crease and typically becomes near-invisible. Lower transcutaneous scars lie just below the lash line and fare similarly well. Both mature over 12 months.

Vision changes are rare. A very rare but serious complication is retrobulbar haematoma — bleeding behind the eye — which is a surgical emergency. This is extremely uncommon in routine blepharoplasty and is best managed by operating in a facility with the capacity to respond promptly.

How to verify credentials and facility standards in Serbia

Surgeon licensing in Serbia is obligatory and verifiable. The Lekarska komora Srbije (Serbian Medical Chamber) publishes a registry of doctors with valid active licences — any surgeon you consider should be findable here before you book. Facilities must meet Ministry of Health conditions (staff, equipment, premises) under Serbian law. Accreditation through Agencija za akreditaciju zdravstvenih ustanova Srbije is an additional quality signal when held — ask the clinic directly.

Ask any Belgrade clinic whether structured pre-operative and intraoperative safety checklists are in use. The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist — validated in a landmark New England Journal of Medicine study showing significant reductions in complications and deaths — is a recognised standard that distinguishes quality facilities.

Serbian law (2025 bylaw on patient consent) requires documented written consent before surgical procedures. Your consent document should cover the planned technique, expected outcomes and limitations, all relevant risks, anaesthesia plan, revision policy, and your right to withdraw. Do not proceed without a written consent document.

FAQ — Blepharoplasty in Serbia

Do I need upper, lower, or both?

Upper blepharoplasty addresses skin hooding and heaviness over the upper lids. Lower blepharoplasty addresses under-eye fat bags. Many patients only need one — having both done when only one is needed can create an over-operated appearance. Send photos for a remote assessment and your surgeon will advise which region to address.

Will blepharoplasty remove my dark circles?

Not reliably. Dark circles are usually caused by pigmentation, thin under-eye skin, or a shadow cast by the tear-trough hollow — not by fat bags. If fat bags are creating a shadow, removing or repositioning the fat can reduce this shadow effect. True pigmentation-related dark circles are not improved by surgery.

What is transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty?

A transconjunctival approach places the incision inside the lower eyelid, leaving no external scar. It is best suited to patients with fat prolapse but minimal excess skin and good lower lid tone. External (transcutaneous) approaches are used when there is significant skin laxity. The right choice depends on your individual anatomy.

How long is recovery and when can I return to work?

Most patients can return to desk work at 7–10 days. Social downtime (being comfortable being seen in public without concealer) is typically 10–14 days. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for 3–4 weeks. Plan your Belgrade stay for 4–6 days minimum — surgery plus suture removal and a final check before flying.

I have dry eyes — can I still have blepharoplasty?

Dry eye must be assessed and disclosed before surgery. Blepharoplasty can temporarily worsen dry eye symptoms in the post-operative period. In patients with significant dry eye, the surgeon may recommend a more conservative approach or additional pre-operative investigation. It is not necessarily a contraindication, but it must be part of your pre-operative discussion.

How do I verify a surgeon’s licence in Serbia?

The Lekarska komora Srbije (Serbian Medical Chamber) maintains a publicly accessible registry of doctors with valid active licences. This is a free check that should be part of your due diligence. Any surgeon you are considering for blepharoplasty in Belgrade should be verifiable in this registry before you book.

Can I combine blepharoplasty with a facelift or brow lift?

Yes — combining blepharoplasty with facelift or brow lift is common. Combined procedures save recovery time but increase operative duration and anaesthesia exposure. Published data shows complication rates are somewhat higher for combined procedures than blepharoplasty alone. Your surgeon should discuss the risk-benefit balance of combining versus staging procedures for your specific anatomy.

I travelled from England to have four procedures carried out (lower blepharoplasty, lip lift, brow lift and fat transfer to face). That’s a lot, but I don’t tend to do things by halves! Prior to choosing Aesthetics Serbia I did very extensive research. I am so glad that I chose them. The communication was excellent from day one. Milica was extremely helpful and answered all of my questions. Milan was very kind and responsive to all my questions. The main consideration for me was that I would be having the work carried out by a highly skilled surgeon. I chose Dr Goran at Medic Hill. I made the right choice for me. The care I received was first class and the price was very affordable. I’m still healing (5 days after first surgery), but everything is looking good. I would definitely recommend Aesthetics Serbia if you are thinking of travelling for plastic surgery. You will be in kind and caring hands, backed by world-class expertise.

I want to shower praise on my patient coordinator with Aesthetic Serbia, who coordinated all my appointments with my surgeon in Belgrade, Serbia. As well, she was there for me to help coordinate the shuttle from the airport and options of available labs near my hotel for the required Covid Antigen test needed to exit the country and just keeping up with me to help along the way with written and voice messages, which were a comfort to me. It certainly made the whole process so much easier for me. Thank you so much!
